Hurricane Melissa hit Jamaica on Tuesday. This is the most dangerous storm in the last 174 years.
Hurricane Melissa reached Cuba on Wednesday evening. Its speed is 208 km per hour. Earlier on Tuesday night, it caused massive devastation in Jamaica. So far, 30 people have died due to Melissa in Haiti, Jamaica and Dominican Republic.
Before the storm hit Cuba, 7 lakh 35 thousand people were sent to safe places. President Miguel Diaz-Canel had warned that there would be huge damage, everyone should evacuate their homes and go to safe places. Due to decrease in wind speed, it has become a category 3 storm from category 5.
UN had said yesterday that this is the most powerful storm of the century. The US Meteorological Department had also said that the speed of Melissa is the same as the ‘Labor Day Hurricane’ of 1935. At that time the wind speed in Florida had reached 300 kilometers per hour.
Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness said that the country has suffered huge losses, but we will rebuild it, better than before. He wrote on X- Those whose houses were destroyed are disappointed. I understand your pain. Relief and reconstruction has begun. We are with you.

Hurricane Melissa becomes a Category 5 storm in 24 hours
Melissa started walking at a speed of 120 kmph on Saturday. In 24 hours till Sunday night its speed increased to 225 kmph. On Monday night, its speed reached 260 kmph, making it a Category-5 storm.
Category 5 storm is considered the most dangerous category of hurricane. The wind speed in this is more than 252 kilometers per hour (or 157 miles per hour).
Its winds are so strong that even strong concrete buildings can be damaged. Trees are uprooted, electricity and communication systems come to a complete halt.
High waves and storm tides can reach several meters in height, causing massive flooding in coastal areas. So far, 4 Category 5 storms have been recorded in 2025.
The storm became stronger due to warming sea water
According to scientists at Climate Central, the water in the ocean over which Hurricane Melissa passed was about 1.4 degrees Celsius warmer due to climate change. That means this heat was due to human-caused pollution and global warming.
Scientists said that when ocean water warms, storms draw in more moisture. Therefore, storms like Melissa can now bring 25 to 50 percent more rainfall than before.
Storm formed by hot air rising from West Africa coast
Hurricane Melissa is the fifth hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. It formed from a ‘tropical wave’ (i.e. a wave of warm and moist air) that arose off the coast of West Africa in early October and moved across the Atlantic Ocean, gradually gaining strength.
The name Melissa is taken from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) six-yearly recurring list.
Earlier in 2019, Melissa was a weak hurricane, so its name was not retired.
If 2025 Melissa causes massive destruction, this name will be permanently removed from the list. The names of storms are chosen for easy pronunciation and identification.
What is the difference between Typhoon, Hurricane and Tornado?
Storm is a kind of disturbance in the atmosphere, which comes through strong winds and is accompanied by rain, snow or hail. When they occur on land, they are called normal storms, but storms that arise from the sea are called hurricanes.
Hurricanes are more dangerous than ordinary storms. Hurricane, cyclone and typhoon are the same thing. Cyclones are called by different names all over the world.
For example, cyclones formed in North America and Caribbean Islands are called hurricanes, cyclones occurring in Philippines, Japan and China are called typhoons and storms occurring around Australia and the Indian Ocean i.e. India are called cyclones.
From the point of view of the oceans, cyclones formed in the Atlantic and North-West Oceans are called hurricanes. Storms that form in the northwest Pacific Ocean are called typhoons. Whereas the storms that arise in the South Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean are called cyclones.
For this reason, the sea storms that come in the areas around India are called cyclones. Tornadoes are also strong storms, but they are not cyclones, because they mostly form on land rather than in the ocean. Most of the tornadoes occur in America.
