Enduring hardships on hundreds of miles of forest and river paths, Rajat entered America through the ‘Dinky Route’ on December 2 last year. Before this journey, he had already embezzled Rs 60 lakh including agent’s fees and other expenses, but he was caught as soon as he entered America.

After suffering torture in the camp for 10 months, the process of deporting him was started on 29 August. Finally, on October 20, he was sent back to India in shackles.

This is the story not only of Rajat, but of almost every one of the 54 youths of Haryana who were deported. America’s Trump government is deporting youth who enter the country illegally. Since January till now, 658 youth of Haryana have been sent back in shackles.

Dainik Bhaskar App tried to talk to these youth, but many of them are still scared or unwilling to talk on camera due to social embarrassment. However, he has shared some videos of the Donkey Route, in which he is going through the dangerous forests and rivers of Panama.

  • Left home on 26th May: 12th pass Rajat told that he left home on 26th May to go to America. The agent had taken Rs 45 lakh and said that there would be no problem on the way, but the reality was different. While going to America via the Donkey Route, sometimes they had to walk through the forests, sometimes in boats, and sometimes they were taken in vehicles. In between, Donkers threatened that if the money was not received, he would cut off his fingers and send them back. The family panicked and kept giving money to the agents so that they could proceed safely. By the time it reached America, Rs 60 lakh had been spent.
  • Took to Dubai, passed through the jungles of Suriname to Panama: Rajat told that first he went to Dubai, from there he was sent to Suriname. Then they were taken in vehicles and taken to Mexico. After this he had to leave on foot through the jungles of Panama. Neither food nor water was available on the way. Donkers threatened to kill several times and demanded money.
  • Danger at every step in the jungles of Panama: Rajat told that the path through the jungles of Panama is very dangerous. There, death looms at every step. Poisonous creatures and wild animals can attack at any time. People travel on foot and with the help of boats. Many people fall ill on that path and are unable to proceed further.   • Caught as soon as he entered America on December 2, Rajat told that on December 2, he crossed the border, after which he was taken to Arizona camp in America. Then from there he was sent to Louisiana Camp in Los Angeles. He stayed there for about 10 months. There were no proper arrangements for food or clothing. A blanket was given, which did not stop even the cold. The process of deporting him started on 29 August and he was sent to India on 20 October.

Important things about Rajat’s elder brother….

  • Donkers asked for money daily: Rajat’s elder brother Vishal Pal told that as soon as Rajat reached Suriname, trouble started. Donkers would ask for money on new pretexts every day. He had threatened that if the money was not received immediately, he would cut off Rajat’s finger and send it back. When the family came to know about this, they got scared. When he went to the agent and talked to him, the agent assured him that everything would be fine. The family paid the money to the agent and Rajat’s journey moved ahead.
  • 10 to 12 people were crammed into a vehicle and transported: Vishal told that the agent had said that Rajat would be safely transported to America by vehicles, but the reality was something else. 10 to 12 people were crammed into 4 seater vehicles. Even breathing became difficult.
  • Took loan on shop, plot and house: The brother told that to send Rajat abroad, the family sold their shop and plot and also took a loan of Rs 10 lakh on the shop. Took some money from relatives. The agent had said that everything would be recovered in a year, but now there is no money left, no hope. Ratan took over his confectionery shop as soon as he came home. Now whatever happened has happened, how long will we keep sitting remembering the past.

However, his 21-year-old son Simrat is still lodged in a camp in America. Mother and son went to Canada in May 2024, where they spent about a month. After this, he somehow entered America and started working in a restaurant there. He had also applied for American citizenship, but after the Trump government was formed, about two-three months ago, the American administration caught him and sent him to a camp.

70 lakhs were raised by selling land, jewelery and animals Jasveer Kaur is originally from Makod Sahib in Sangrur district of Punjab. Her husband, Avtar Singh, said that they had sold about 1.5 acres of their 2 acres of land, gold and silver jewelery and even animals to send the mother and son abroad. A total expenditure of Rs 70 lakh was incurred on this. The family is deeply worried as their son Simrat is still stuck in America.

Ambala’s Harjindra’s feet swollen, shackled prick 28-year-old Harjinder Singh of Ambala also went to America after spending Rs 35 lakh, where he got a job as a cook in Jackson Well area of ​​Florida. Harjindra tells that he spent 25 hours in the ship tied in chains. “We were tied like prisoners – with handcuffs on our hands, shackles on our legs and a thick chain tied around our waist.
