Government warning! Do not use WhatsApp Web on office laptops, you will also be shocked

Whatsapp Web: The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology of the Government of India has issued a public notice warning people not to use WhatsApp Web on their office laptop or computer. The ministry said that even though it seems convenient to reach personal chat and files during work, by doing so your personal information can reach your employer or IT team.

Personal chat risk

According to government consultation, the office network and system administrators can reach your personal messages and files through WhatsApp Web. This is possible in many ways such as screen-monitoring software, malware, or browser through hijacking.

Increasing concern over cyber security

This warning has come at a time when there are increasing threats to cyber security at workplaces. According to the government’s information Security Awareness (ISEA) team, many companies are now considering WhatsApp Web as a possible security risk. It can become a gateway of malware or fishing attack, which can threaten the entire corporate network.

Office Wi-Fi also threatened

It has also been told in the counseling that not only the office device but also using office Wi-Fi, companies can get partial access to the data of private phone of employees. Apart from this, if the office laptop is hacked, then private data can be a victim of data breech, especially on unsafe Wi-Fi networks.

If the use of Whatsapp Web is necessary

If for some reason you have to use Whatsapp Web on the office laptop, then the government has suggested some security measures.

• Always logout before leaving the desk.
• Avoid clicking links or attachments from unknown contact.
• Understand the IT and data policy of your company well and act accordingly.
