Australia’s star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell on Tuesday confirmed that he will not participate in the mini-auction for IPL 2026. His decision has indicated that perhaps he has played his last match in the Indian Premier League. Before Maxwell, legends like Andre Russell and Faf Duplessis have also withdrawn from the auction this time. This time the mini-auction is to be held on 16 December in Abu Dhabi.

Announcement of decision on social media

37-year-old Maxwell released a post on social media saying that this decision was not easy, but he has taken it after much consideration. He wrote, ‘After many memorable seasons in the IPL, I have decided not to put my name in the auction this year. It’s a big decision, and I’m taking it with great gratitude, because this league has given me so much. Maxwell also hinted in his post that his IPL journey may now be over.

Maxwell’s emotional message

In his post, Maxwell thanked IPL and said, ‘IPL has not only made me a better player but also a better person. In this league, I played with world-class players, was part of great teams and the energy of the Indian crowd always inspired me. In the end he wrote, ‘The memories, challenges and energy found in India will always remain in my heart. Thank you, hope to see you soon.

Injury and form made the decision difficult

Last season, Maxwell played for Punjab Kings. During that time, under the leadership of captain Shreyas Iyer and coach Ricky Ponting, he started well, but then a finger injury ruled him out of the season. Punjab bought him in the auction for Rs 4.2 crore. However, he was able to score only 48 runs in six innings. Due to his failure to live up to the expectations, the team management used him mostly in the role of a bowler.

Maxwell did not give any reason for participating in the auction, but most of the big teams are tired of waiting for him to perform well. Despite being often sold at high prices, they have not been able to perform well. Using data analysis, it has become clear that they have been getting prices much higher than their worth.

Maxwell’s journey was full of ups and downs

Maxwell’s IPL career was very ups and downs. He was first bought by Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in 2012. In 2014, he performed brilliantly for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) and was counted among the most dangerous batsmen of that season. After that, his performance remained up and down in many seasons. Sometimes he won matches with stormy batting and sometimes he performed disappointingly. His aggressive play, unique shots and part-time spin gave him a unique identity in T20 cricket. 2014, 2021 and 2023 were the best seasons for Maxwell with the bat. He scored 552 runs in the year 2014. He played an important role in Punjab’s journey to the final. At the same time, he scored 513 runs in the year 2021 and 400 runs in 2023.

Is a return to IPL possible?

Although Maxwell has not clearly announced his retirement, his See You Soon message indicates that he may return to the IPL in the future in the role of mentor, coach or team ambassador. Even though Maxwell’s IPL journey seems to be coming to an end, he entertained the audience a lot with his game. Just as Andre Russell and Faf Duplessis left a legacy behind when they left the league, Maxwell’s impact on the league is no less.
