40 crore people are expected to come to Mahakumbh, the world’s largest religious event, which lasts for more than a month. During this time there will be no call drop here and uninterrupted internet streaming will happen. Additional optical fiber laying, new towers and base transvience stations (BTS) and installing cell on wheels (transportable tower) are among the various measures taken to ensure strong and uninterrupted connectivity in the fair area during the event.
According to the Integrated Control and Command Center (ICCC) officials, three disaster management centers have been set up in the fair area to support emergency communication and ensure quick response during any crisis. Mostly all telecom service providers have extended their services here to ensure uninterrupted communication for millions of devotees and visitors.

Telecom operators are facing a unique challenge because millions of people gather in one place and use services like mobile/internet/messages etc. together.

The Ministry of Telecommunications also directed the Telecom Service Provider to use advanced technology and customize the network in view of the huge crowd of people. Besides, permanent towers have also been installed on government buildings outside the fair area, which will solve the problem of mobile connectivity in the city.
To increase public safety and convenience, the Telecom Service Provider has set up 53 help desks in the fair area. They are providing services such as reporting suspected fraud communication and blocking lost or stolen mobiles.
In addition, emergency alerts, disaster warnings and cell broadcast alert facilities and common alerting protocol (CAP) integrated platforms are being used to make the general public aware throughout the fair period.
According to the Ministry of Telecommunications, 26 km optical fiber has been laid in the Prayagraj city area, which strengthens the spine of telecom infrastructure. In addition, 328 new towers or mast have been installed, which further strengthen coverage in the urban landscape.
A total of 575 new BTS have been installed in all mobile technology, besides upgrading 1,462 existing BTS units, which ensures strong and uninterrupted connectivity in the city during the fair.
At least 92 km of optical fiber cable (offc) has been laid to provide high-speed, reliable network coverage. To meet heavy demand, 78 COW (Transportable Tower) and 150 outdoor small-cell solutions are being deployed, which ensure smooth communication in congested areas.
Airtel spokesperson said that the company has set up 287 new sites, adapted more than 340 existing sites and laid an additional 74 km of fiber in the city to increase mobile coverage. The company has deployed 78 active cell on wheels in the Kumbh Mela campus, which extends for several kilometers. These measures are ensuring uninterrupted connectivity not only within the fair premises but also in areas with highways, railway stations, airports, hotels and high pedestrians.
