President of India Draupadi Murmu addressed the National Assembly of Botswana on Wednesday. On reaching Parliament he was welcomed by Speaker Dithapelo L Keorapetse, Deputy Speaker and Leader of the Opposition. In his address, Murmu lauded Botswana’s progress since independence. He said that India has been a reliable partner of Botswana from the beginning in its development journey. President Murmu said that since independence, Botswana’s hard-working people and visionary leaders have built a strong nation dedicated to peace, stability and inclusive development. Murmu said India is proud to have played a role as an early partner in Botswana’s nation-building journey. He said that cooperation between India and Botswana spans many sectors like education, health, technology, agriculture, defence, trade and investment.
Let us tell you that this is President Murmu’s first state visit to Botswana. He met President Duma Bokau at Rashtrapati Bhavan and discussed many important issues. Both countries agreed to increase economic cooperation, strengthen strategic partnership and give a new direction to trade relations.

President Murmu said that he had a very meaningful conversation with President Bokau this morning. We discussed bilateral, regional and global issues. Both countries reiterated their deep ties based on democratic values ​​and mutual respect. He said that an important agreement has been signed between India and Botswana, which will enable the citizens of Botswana to easily get affordable and quality Indian medicines. India will also send essential ARV medicines (for HIV treatment) to Botswana.

In his address, President Murmu said that Botswana is a shining example of democracy, good governance and effective leadership. He said that this is proof that when democracy works for the welfare of the common people and national resources are used for the development of all, then a country becomes strong. He said that relations between India and Botswana are based on mutual trust, respect and shared values ​​of democracy. The friendship between the two countries is not only strengthened by their past, but also rests on the bright promises of the future.
