US President Donald Trump has said that he is currently not considering banning the countries buying oil from Russia. Trump said, “I may have to think about it (of tariffs) in two or three weeks, but we do not need to think about it immediately.”
In an interview with Fox News, Trump said-
Russia has lost a large oil customer due to India’s 25% extra -tariff on Russian oil trade. Similar tariffs on China will be disastrous for Russia. If I had to do this, I will do it, but maybe I will not need to do so
In fact, Trump imposed 25% extra tariff on India on August 6 to buy oil and weapons from Russia. It will be applicable from 27 August. After which the total tariff on India will be 50%.
However, India has made it clear that there is no ban in Russian oil shopping after Trump’s threats. The same, Trump-Putin spoke on Ukraine Jung in Alaska late Friday night. India has welcomed the move. The Ministry of External Affairs said- the world wants to see Russia-Ukraine battle ending.
There was no deal between Trump-Putin
Putin and Trump met in Alaska late Friday night. They had a meeting for about 3 hours on ending the Ukraine battle. After this, the two leaders held only 12 minutes of joint press conference. During this time he did not answer any questions of journalists.
During the press conference, Trump said that our meeting was very positive. We agreed to several points, but no deal was made. There will be an agreement only when it takes the final form.
Trump gave 10 out of 10 marks to this meeting. At the same time, Putin said that Russia’s safety is most important for him. He suggested the next meeting in Moscow. After speaking of his point, the two leaders immediately left the stage.

India Welcoming conversation between Trump-Putin
India on Saturday welcomed the meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska. Described it as a commendable step.
The Ministry of External Affairs also issued a statement to emphasize the importance of diplomacy to resolve the Ukraine conflict. The statement further said, ‘India appreciates the progress made at the summit. The way ahead can only go out of dialogue and diplomacy. The world wants to see the end of the struggle in Ukraine soon. ‘
US Finance Minister threatened extra tariffs on India
Prior to Trump-Putin talks, US Finance Minister Scott Besant threatened to impose extra tariffs on India. Talking to Bloomberg, he had said- This tariff will depend on the result of the meeting of US President Trump and Russian President Putin to be held in Alaska on Friday.
Earlier, Trump also warned on 13 August that if Moscow did not agree to the peace agreement, serious consequences would have to be suffered.
Talking to Fox News in a separate interview, Scott Besant said that India has a more stubborn stand in talks about business. The conversation stopped earlier this month when Trump refused to further discuss India’s trade and other differences with Russia.
India is the second largest buyer of Russian oil
India is the largest buyer of Russian oil after China. Before the Ukraine War, India used to import only 0.2% (68 thousand barrels per day) from Russia. By May 2023 it increased to 45% (2 million barrels per day), while India is buying 17.8 lakh barrels of oil from Russia every day from January to July in 2025.
For the last two years, India has been buying more than $ 130 billion (Rs 11.33 lakh crore) every year.
Trump imposed a total of 50% tariff on India
US President Trump announced to impose 25% extra tariff on India on 6 August. He signed the executive order associated with it. This order will be applicable from August 27.
The executive order states that this action has been taken on India due to Russian oil purchases. Earlier, he announced 25% tariff on India on 30 July. Now India will have a total of 50% tariff. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has denied this action as wrong.
According to the report of Hindustan Times, now in response to this, India is also considering imposing up to 50% tariff on selected American products.
If this happens, it will be India’s first formal retaliation on the tariff of American President Donald Trump.
