Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant on Tuesday gave a unique message to young lawyers. While addressing an event, he told the young lawyers that they should consider themselves not just ‘case builders’ but ‘nation builders’. He asked the students what is the importance of a lawyer in a country like India and what should be his role. Let us tell you that CJI Surya Kant was saying this in the seventh convocation ceremony of Rajiv Gandhi National Law University (RGNUL).
During this, the CJI also emphasized that every generation inherits an incomplete republic and gets the responsibility of building the future. He said that our Constitution is not a stone statue, but a wonderful blueprint. Courts give it interpretation, institutions give it structure, but you give it life.

The country is built by the legal profession – CJI
The CJI further said that often the legal profession is reduced to just winning cases or billing by the hour, whereas this does not build the nation. The case builder focuses only on today’s dispute, whereas the nation builder thinks about how today’s dispute will affect tomorrow’s society.
He said that India is rapidly modernizing and the issues of law are not as simple as before. Contracts now involve algorithms, digital assets in assets and families spread across multiple countries. In such a situation, the lawyer will not only have to argue but also interpret the law, give advice, innovate and maintain humanity.
CJI gave these messages to the students
The CJI further said that judicial reforms and modernization of courts will have real meaning only when young lawyers implement it at the ground level. He told the students that the case builder asks, how do I win? The Nation Builder asks, which system am I strengthening?

Three grounds are necessary for a long career in law – CJI
He said that for a successful and long career, three foundations are necessary, honesty, empathy and curiosity. Integrity is the foundation of the justice system, justice through empathy is applied in real life, not just on paper, and curiosity makes the law responsive to the changing world. In the end, CJI Surya Kant also advised to use technology, but cautioned that technology should not be a substitute for justice but should be helpful.
