Bollywood actress Sonali Bendre is these days hosting the reality show husband, wife and Panga with comedian Munawwar Farooqui. This is the first time Sonali is seen as a host. In a conversation with Dainik Bhaskar, Sonali spoke openly about her first experience of hosting. He also explained the difference between the 90s cinema and today’s films.
When you first heard about husband, wife and pang, what idea came to your mind?
When I first heard about husband, wife and Panga, I first thought that whether these people believe in marriage or not. Because if you have to mess and do not believe in marriage, then what is its purpose? So my first question was also whether you believe in marriage? When he said yes, we believe in marriage, then I felt that it is okay, now we can talk further.
From there, I understood that this concept means loving noise. And as we all know, there is no marriage that does not have noose or pangs. In fact, these are the small quarrels that show that you believe and understand each other. I think it is the most beautiful part of the wedding.
According to you, to what extent should there be noises in a married relationship?
I think this decision should be made by the husband and wife to what extent they want to accept Nokzhonk in their marriage. Every person has a different nature. Some people talk more openly and there are conflicts, while some are calm and restrained. Therefore, the limit of the noose cannot be fixed on a fixed scale. It completely depends on your partner.
Will you just host the show or give any kind of target to couples?
No, not only hosting, many types of targets will also be given to couples in this show. Actually, through the show, we do their reality check in a way. If a pair feels that their relationship is perfect, then we show them another aspect of their relationship. Many times couples know their truth, but many times we give them such surprise, which they would never have imagined. Overall, it is a fun show.
If you are going to host the show with Munawar Farooqui, have you roasted him so far?
Till now Munawwar has not got a chance to roast, but now that we are on the same stage, it is a fun challenge for me. Anyway, it is not easy to roast such a strong roster, but this time I will try my best to reply to Munawar in his own style.
How challenging is it working as a host?
When I sit in a judge’s chair, my focus is only on assessing that act. But the responsibility as a host is much more. You not only have to create an atmosphere, but while handling every situation, you have to take the comedy to the point where the audience also enjoys and keeps control. At the moment, the biggest challenge for me is how to keep every moment entertaining and kept it in the balance.
What differences do you see in the 90s films and today’s films?
I think I was limited to making films in the 90 era. At that time the theater was the main medium and only those films were made that could attract the big viewers. But since the multiplexes and later OTT platforms have come, things have changed a lot.
Today, even the smallest story has become a special place, which was not before. Stories used to happen earlier also, but people often used to seek them in books. Now we get to see the same stories on different platforms, such as OTT, Instagram Reels or YouTube shorts.
Do you think the arrival of OTT is damaging theaters?
I do not think theaters have suffered a complete damage due to the arrival of OTT. There are many films that people still want to experience on the big screen. Actually, every story has its own place. There are some films whose real fun comes only in the cinema hall. The best thing is that today’s audience has become very intelligent. He knows which story can be seen on OTT and which film is worth watching in the theater.
