Elon Musk’s aerospace company SpaceX will build Moonbase Alpha, the first permanent human presence outside Earth. SpaceX has designed its Starship spacecraft specifically for this, with the aim of establishing permanent human outposts on the Moon and other planets. Elon Musk’s company has been selected for NASA’s Artemis program and is tasked with landing the first astronauts on the Moon for more than 50 years.
Starship Capacity
According to information shared by SpaceX, a Starship has more than 600 cubic meters of pressurized space and two airlocks. Its habitable space is more than twice that available in the Apollo lunar lander. Also, it can unload cargo up to 100 tonnes.
SpaceX is self-funding more than 90 percent of Starship’s development work, including production, testing and launch infrastructure. The company has already completed several test milestones for the core Starship system, including:
- Multiple flight tests involving rocket launch, return, catch and reuse.
- Propellant transfer and engine relighting tests in space.
Additionally, the Human Landing System (HLS) team has completed 49 milestones, including life support system development, landing software, Raptor engine testing, and EVA elevator/airlock demonstration.
SpaceX’s future missions
The next major steps include a long-duration flight test and propellant transfer to orbit. Long duration flight testing will make it possible to collect data on vehicle propulsion and thermal behavior over extended duration missions, including long-term propellant storage and boil-off characteristics.
In addition, on-orbit refueling capability is also essential, as it will enable Starship to complete the Artemis lunar mission structure and carry a payload of up to 100 tons directly to the lunar surface. This capability will enable Starship to carry rovers, habitats, and other payloads needed to establish a permanent and permanent presence on the Moon. Starship V3 is equipped with a docking port, DragonEye sensors, and advanced on-orbit refueling capabilities.
