Political heat has increased in West Bengal over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list. State Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday wrote a letter to the Election Commission demanding that central government employees be deployed as micro-observers to make the SIR process completely transparent and fair.

Officials said the second phase of SIR is the most important part of the entire revision, as it will depend on how accurate, fair and tamper-free the final voter list will be. He claimed that there are frequent complaints of undue influence and interference during the process, which jeopardizes the credibility of the SIR.

He appealed to the Commission that the entire scrutiny phase and hearing be conducted under the surveillance of CCTV cameras and the footage be kept safe till the completion of the SIR process. According to him, this step will ensure transparency and eliminate possibilities of any kind of rigging.

Officials said that to maintain impartiality, it is necessary that micro-observers should be from among the central employees, so that there is no scope for political pressure. BJP claims that this will prevent possible irregularities in the voter list and increase public confidence in the process.
