Political activity has intensified regarding the upcoming general elections in Bangladesh. Interim government head Muhammad Yunus warned on Wednesday that many forces inside and outside the country may try to sabotage the election process. Yunus said that after the decision to keep former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League out of the elections, some powerful groups may create obstacles in the way of restoration of democracy.
‘Forces at home and abroad want to thwart the elections’
According to Yunus’ press secretary Shafiqul Alam, in a high-level meeting, Yunus said that many powerful forces in the country and abroad will try to spoil the elections. The possibility of sudden attacks also cannot be ruled out. He also said that AI-generated videos and false propaganda campaigns can be run on social media and online platforms during the elections, which needs immediate action. Yunus said that the upcoming elections will be difficult and challenging, but the country will have to overcome these obstacles.

Ban on Awami League and rise of BNP
The Yunus government has shut down the activities of the Awami League on national security grounds and several party leaders are facing trial for treason and human rights violations. The Election Commission has suspended the registration of the party, due to which it will not be able to participate in the upcoming elections. In such a situation, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s party Bangladesh Nationalist Party is now considered the main contender in the elections. Awami League supporters have been taking out flash marches in Dhaka from time to time, on which the police have taken action several times.
