CCTV footage records firing

According to the police, Hadi was seen on a rickshaw in Bijaynagar area at around 2.30 pm.

CCTV footage shows that a motorcycle approached the rickshaw from behind, then stopped on the right side and the person sitting behind fired at Hadi from close range.

Both the people riding the bike were wearing helmets. The entire incident happened within a few seconds and the attackers immediately fled from the spot.

Inquilab Manch activist Mohammad Rafi, who was following Hadi in another rickshaw, said they were heading towards the High Court area to have lunch after Friday prayers. As soon as they reached Bijaynagar, two people on a motorcycle opened fire on Hadi and ran away.

Hadi had received death threats before

Sharif Osman Hadi is a prominent Bangladeshi political activist, writer and spokesperson for the right-wing Islamic organization ‘Inquilab Manch’. Even in November 2025, he had received death threats from 30 foreign numbers on Facebook.

He is recognized as an influential youth leader who emerged after the massive student-led movement of July–August 2024.

Hadi has written several books on the cultural and political spheres of Bangladesh, focusing on the country’s cultural challenges ahead of the July protests.

In December 2024 he accused the Awami League of the killings of students. Additionally, Hadi described the Islamic Crimes Tribunal’s death sentence to Sheikh Hasina as an example.

Hadi had announced to contest the upcoming parliamentary elections as an independent candidate from Dhaka-8 constituency (Motijheel, Shahbag, Ramna, Paltan and Shahjahanpur).

Sharif Osman Hadi was a political activist, writer and leader.

Inquilab Manch involved in toppling Sheikh Hasina’s government

Inquilab Manch emerged as an organization after the student movement of August 2024. It toppled the Awami League government of then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

This organization remained active in declaring Awami League a terrorist and demanding its complete destruction and safety of the youth.

This organization emphasizes on protecting national independence and sovereignty. This organization played an important role in dissolving the Awami League in May 2025 and disqualifying it from the elections.

The Election Commission had announced the date of the 13th parliamentary elections a day earlier. In such a situation, this attack increased the fear of political violence.

Elections will be held in Bangladesh on 12 February

General elections will be held in Bangladesh on 12 February next year. The country’s Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasiruddin announced this on Thursday evening. This election is taking place one and a half year after the overthrow of former PM Sheikh Hasina.

After the coup on August 5, 2024, Hasina left the country and came to India. Since then, an interim government is running there under the leadership of Mohammad Yunus.

Hasina’s party will not be able to participate in next year’s elections. The registration of Bangladesh’s largest party, Awami League, was suspended by the Election Commission in May 2025.

The interim government has arrested big leaders of the party. Awami League has been banned from contesting elections and political activities.
