Waqar-e-Zaman is considered a supporter of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and India. He helped Sheikh Hasina leave Bangladesh after the coup on 5 August. On the contrary, Mohammad Faizur Rahman is known for his radical thinking and pro -Pakistan stance.

After graduating from Bangladesh Military Academy, he earned a Masters degree in Defense Study from the National University of Bangladesh. In November 2020, he was promoted as Lieutenant General. He has commanded the Infantry Brigade, School of Infantry and Tactics and Army Headquarters. Waqar has also worked in the United Nations peace missions.
He was the Chief of General Staff of the Army for about 6 months before taking over as the Chief of Army Staff. On 23 June 2024, he became the Chief of Army Staff i.e. the Army Chief of Bangladesh.

According to media reports, Begum Sarahanaj Kamalika Rahman Sheikh, wife of the Bangladesh Army Chief, is the daughter of Mustafizur Rahman, uncle. Mustafizur Rahman has taken over the army reins from 1997 to 2000. Sheikh Hasina was also the Prime Minister of Bangladesh during this period.
According to media reports, the Government of India officials had warned former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of the possible threats to make General War-e-Zaman as the army chief in June last year. Bypassing these warnings, Sheikh Hasina made General War-e-Zaman as the army chief.
