In Australia, a big step has been taken regarding the safety of minors on social media. Tech giant Meta has started the process of removing all users under the age of 16 on Instagram and Facebook from the platform from Tuesday. This step is being implemented under Australia’s new social media policy, which will be effective from December 10.
After the recent large-scale age verification conducted by the company, approximately 5 lakh such accounts have been identified whose estimated age is less than 16 years. Lockout notices have been sent to these accounts and they will be completely removed from the platform by December 10. Meta has clearly said that the Messenger app is not included in this ban.

Meta advised affected users to download their data, including posts, photos, videos and private messages, as soon as possible. The message sent says, “Soon you will no longer be able to use Facebook and your profile will no longer be visible to you or others.” The company has also asked them to update their contact details so that they can be contacted after completing 16 years.
Facial age verification option
The company also acknowledged that there is “the potential for some errors” in age determination and that some users older than 16 may fall into the process by mistake. Such users can prove their age by giving a video selfie or government ID through Yoti’s facial age verification system. Any user who wants to change his/her date of birth to appear above 16 years will have to compulsorily provide proof of age.

What did Meta say on social media ban?
Meta Australia managing director Will Easton said the move was fraught with challenges, but the company’s goal was to provide youth with a safe online experience. He said, “We agree with the government’s goal, although outright bans bring with them many challenges. Nevertheless, we will continue to work in favor of a safe and balanced digital environment.”
