Subsonic Cruise Missile: The strength of the Indian Air Force is going to increase even more soon, as the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has started building a new air launch subcutical cruise missile (ALSCM). This missile is being prepared keeping in mind the current security needs and future strategic challenges. Its special thing is that it will be able to target important locations like enemy’s airbase, command posts and logistic centers from a distance of up to 600 km.
Why is this new missile special?
DRDO is based on its pre -developed ITCM missile technology, but it will be fired not from the ground, but by air. It is being designed in such a way that it can be easily launched from the leading fighter jets of the Indian Air Force such as SU-30MKI, Rafael, MiG-29, Tejas and future AMCA.
A major advantage of this air launch system is that additional boosters will not be required to launch it, as the aircraft will already give it a height and speed. This will also reduce the cost and will also increase flexibility in operation.
Combination of accuracy and stealth technology
The missile will be installed in indigenous ‘Manik’ Turbofan engine, which is being made better for this mission. Also, it will include modern navigation equipment such as interpreter navigation and satellite guidance systems, which will make it a very accurate attack. Its aerodynamic design will be such that it will be able to fly at a very low height, avoiding the enemy radar and air security systems.
Comparison with BrahMos-NG
The new subconic cruise missile is being made mild and more economical, so that it can be deployed in large numbers than supersonic systems like BrahMos-NG. The speed of BrahMos-NG is almost Mach 3.5 and is useful for sharp and fatal attacks, while this new missile would be a slightly slow but long distance and strategic ability.
How long can be deployed?
According to sources, the first flight of this missile can be tested by the end of the year 2025. Since it is based on the ITCM missile already in testing of DRDO, it can develop at a relatively fast speed. If all the tests were successful and the induction process was smooth, it can be included in the limited operational units of the Indian Air Force by 2027.
