Posting on X (East Twitter), the American Embassy said, “All applicants of F, M and J category are expected to make public the privacy settings of their social media accounts so that their personality and eligibility for entry into America can be correctly investigated.” Its purpose is to make visa process more transparent and safe. Investigation of social media waiting i.e. online activities has now become an important part of America’s visa policy.

Which accounts will be investigated?

American officials will examine students’ activities on platforms like Facebook, X (Twitter), LinkedIn, Tiktok. In this investigation, it will be seen whether any applicant has shared objectionable or opposing views against America, its policies, institutions, or people.

Extension of Trump administration policy

This step is part of the policy of Trump administration, in which strict investigation into the background of foreigners coming to America. Only last month, the Trump administration directed American embassies around the world to temporarily stop new students and exchange visa interviews. At the same time, the Biden administration was accused that due to loose investigation of immigrants at the time, the fraud increased.

Now the US says that on the basis of information received from social media, it will decide which person is suitable for visa and who can prove to be a threat to national security.

Three major categories of visa

F visa: For academic students studying in universities and colleges

M Visa: For students getting technical and vocational education

J visa: For those participating in cultural and academic exchange programs

Visa eligibility will be decided by social media data

The embassy clarified that “Since 2019, the US has been demanding social media ID from visa applicants. Now we will use this information to strengthen national security and identify ineligible people.”
