Scientists in India have discovered the drug of Chandipura virus through which the risk of patient’s life can be reduced. The Chandipura virus is a rabdovirus, who was first discovered in 1965 in Chandipura village in Nagpur district of Maharashtra. Hence it was named Chandipura. The virus spreads from sand bite and causes rapid encephalitis affecting the brain in children, which is called brain fever in common language. It targets children between five and 15 years of age. The patient dies within 24 to 48 hours with symptoms like fever, vomiting, fainting.

Firstly effective drug confirmation: ICMR
Scientists at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) based in New Delhi say that the virus has been a ‘silent killer’ in India over the years. The search for possible antiviral treatment against it was completed. ICMR’s Pune -based National Institute of Virology (NIV) has found a drug called Favipiravi in ​​its cell and animal model experiments to prevent the growth of this deadly virus. This is the first time that the effectiveness of a drug for this deadly virus has been confirmed scientifically in India.
Scientists will start human testing soon
In the year 2024, outbreak of Chandipur virus came to light in Gujarat, which was the largest in the last 20 years. During this period, between June and August 2024, 82 people died in several states including Gujarat while more than 245 were hit. Scientists say that human tests on Favipiravi medicine can now be initiated soon.
Hundreds of patients have died
Between 2003 and 2004, 329 people were hit in Andhra Pradesh in this outbreak, of which 183 people died. At the same time, 114 people died in Maharashtra and 24 in Gujarat. Between 2004 and 2011, 31 people died in Gujarat while more than 100 people were hit. Between 2009 and 2011, 16 deaths occurred in other states.

Virus the highest in these 10 states
In tribal areas of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Border region of Telangana, Odisha, Bihar and Jharkhand, besides the eastern region of Uttar Pradesh, are called acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) belts where children are found to have mentioned fever every year.
