Kalpana Chawla was born on 17 March 1962 in Karnal, Haryana. His family members used to call him “Montu” with love. Since childhood, he was fond of space and flying. He did his early studies from Tagore Bal Niketan School, Karnal.

Kalpana Chawla took admission in Punjab Engineering College (PEC), Chandigarh in 1976. He studied aeronautical engineering and earned a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degree in 1982.

Kalpana’s dreams were very big. So she went to America for higher education. He received the Master of Science (M.Sc) degree from Texas University, Arlington. Subsequently, in 1988, he completed his PhD in Aerospace Engineering from Colorado University.

Seeing Kalpana Chawla’s ability, she was selected for the Astronaut program in NASA in 1994. In 1997, for the first time, he flew in space from Space Shuttle Columbia and elevated India’s name proudly.

This tragic accident in 2003 shook the whole country

In 2003, Kalpana Chawla went on a second and last time on space trip. The name of this mission was STS-107 and it lasted for 16 days. But this journey ended in a sad way. When Spacecraft Columbia was returning to the earth’s atmosphere, it broke down. In this accident, seven astronauts, including Kalpana Chawla, died tragically. After this incident, the Columbia Space Shuttle Mission was stopped for many years.
