Trinamool Congress Claims SFI Attack on Education Minister at Jadavpur University Protest

Tmc protest against sfi: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) protested in Kolkata on Saturday (March 01, 2025) against the Indian Students Union (SFI).

TMC alleges that SFI members attacked West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu at Jadavpur University. The windscreen of Basu’s car was broken and misbehaved with their security guards.

SFI performance and minister’s siege
On Saturday, members of CPI (M) student branch SFI and AISA protested demanding the announcement of the dates of the student union election of Jadavpur University. During the protest, the education minister’s car was surrounded and attacked. More than 100 protesters surrounded Basu when he was about to sit in the car.

Minister’s statement – ‘SFI wanted anarchy’
Education Minister Basu said, “I tried to talk to the protesting students, but they did not want any dialogue. They only wanted to spread chaos.” The minister said that he had offered to talk to five student representatives, but the protesters did not calm down. Basu suffered a hand injury from a broken glass, after which he was taken to SSKM Hospital. While exiting the hospital, he said that X-rays were done due to chest pain, but there was no serious injury.

SFI held TMC responsible
SFI leader Kaushiki Bhattacharya dismissed the allegations, saying, “We did not resort to violence. TMC outsiders attacked our workers and used vulgar language against us.”

TMC told the attack ‘conspiracy’
TMC state general secretary Kunal Ghosh called this attack an attempt to spread anarchy in the state. He said, “Our patience and tolerance should not be considered our weakness.” Now it will be interesting to see what the controversy on the student union elections in Jadavpur University takes the turn.
