The BJP has elected Rekha Gupta for the first time in the assembly for the post of Chief Minister, while the Aam Aadmi Party has appointed former Chief Minister Atishi as Leader of Opposition.

From 1993 to 1998 in the assembly, BJP made Madanlal Khurana, Sahib Singh and Sushma Swaraj the Chief Minister a few months before the election. Sushma Swaraj became the first woman Chief Minister of Delhi. During this time, the Leader of Opposition was Congress MLA Jagapravesh Chandra.

At the same time, after the change of power in the year 1998, the Congress made Sheila Dixit the Chief Minister and she was the Chief Minister till the year 2013. During this period, in the three terms of the assembly, from the year 1998 to 2008, BJP’s Prof. Jagdish Mukhi was the Leader of Opposition and from the year 2008 to 2013, the BJP, its senior leader Prof. Vijay Kumar Malhotra was given the responsibility of Leader of Opposition.
