Ways To Avoid Heart Attack In Cold Weather: The harsh cold and falling temperatures have created a serious situation for health services in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. There has been a sudden surge in the number of patients in the OPD of local hospitals, especially the Heart Institute. According to the data, health checkup of 1123 patients was done in OPD last Monday, out of which 82 serious patients with heart attack symptoms had to be admitted immediately.
The irony was that seven patients were ‘brought dead’, that is, they died before reaching the hospital. The situation remained dire even on Tuesday, where 869 patients were tested and 45 admitted, of which 13 were victims of brain stroke. On Tuesday also, six patients died before reaching the hospital.
This situation makes it clear that due to shrinking of blood vessels and increase in blood pressure in extreme cold, the risk to the heart and brain has increased significantly. According to health experts, the main reason for such a situation is some carelessness during cold days, about which everyone should know and take precautions.

Lack of adequate clothing and direct exposure to cold
The biggest carelessness in extreme cold is not covering the body completely and coming in direct contact with the cold wind (cold wave) of morning and evening. Many people leave the head, ears and feet exposed, as most of the body heat escapes from these areas.
When cold air hits the body directly, the blood vessels constrict rapidly. This slows down the blood flow and the heart has to work twice as hard to deliver blood to the body parts, which causes a sudden heart attack.

Taking bath with cold water early in the morning and physical exercise
In winter, waking up early in the morning and taking bath with cold water or suddenly going out in cold environment increases the risk of brain stroke manifold. Sudden temperature changes cause blood pressure to ‘spike’, which can cause the fine veins of the brain to burst or a blood clot to form in them. Additionally, doing heavy exercise in extreme cold without warming up also puts additional burden on the heart. Heart patients should go for a walk only after sunlight comes out.

Eating disorders and low water intake
Thirst decreases in cold weather, due to which people drink less water. Due to lack of water in the body, blood becomes thick, which increases the risk of ‘clotting’ or clotting. Besides, excessive consumption of salt and fatty heavy food in winter also increases blood pressure and cholesterol. For those who are already suffering from high BP or diabetes, this carelessness can prove fatal because thick blood cannot flow easily in the arteries.

Do not ignore the symptoms
The ‘golden hour’ (first one hour) is most important in heart attack and brain stroke. If you feel heaviness in the chest, sweating, pain in the left arm or jaw, sudden stammering in speech, slant of the face or weakness in one part of the body, then do not waste time in home remedies considering it to be a common cold. In such a situation, immediately reach the emergency department of the nearest hospital. By getting timely medical help, not only the life of the patient can be saved, but future disability can also be avoided.
