Taking a big step regarding technical security, the Donald Trump administration has tightened the noose on foreign drones. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has banned the distribution of all new foreign drone models in the US, citing ‘national security concerns’. The biggest impact of this decision is going to be on the famous Chinese drone company DJI. The government has clarified that American citizens who are already using older foreign drone models can continue to fly them. This restriction will apply only to new models. The FCC claimed in a fact sheet that “criminals, foreign enemies, and terrorists” could use these drones to pose a serious threat to America’s security.
What is ‘Covered List’?
The agency has updated its ‘covered list’. This is a list of products that are considered to pose an ‘unacceptable risk’ to the national security of the country. Now all ‘UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) and their critical components’ manufactured abroad have been included in this list.
Preparation for ‘American Drone Dominance’
Brendan Carr, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, supported the policy on Monday. He said, “I welcome this national security decision from the Executive Branch. I am pleased that the FCC has now added foreign drones and related components to its covered list. Following President Trump’s leadership, the FCC will work closely with American drone manufacturers to maintain ‘American drone dominance’.”
Chinese companies will be most deeply affected
This new rule will affect many foreign companies, but it is a big blow to Chinese drone manufacturer DJI. DJI is currently considered the largest player in drone sales worldwide and in the US. The company said it has not released any data on what information was used to reach this decision. DJI claimed that their products are the safest on the market and that they will continue to advocate for an open and competitive market for American consumers.
Trump’s strict policy
Donald Trump has consistently adopted a tough stance against Chinese companies during his tenure. The foundation for this new drone ban was laid with an executive order passed in June. Its purpose is to promote the production of US-made drones and protect the US drone supply chain from foreign control.
