Bangladesh: ‘Government will take responsibility of the family of slain Hindu worker…’, Mohammad Yunus assured – Bangladesh Govt To Take Responsibility Of Slain Hindu Worker’s Family: Adviser

A senior adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government said on Tuesday the state would take responsibility for the family of a Hindu activist who was beaten to death by a mob last week on charges of blasphemy. Education advisor CR Abrar met the family of Dipu Das. Dipu Das was killed by a mob in Mymensingh on 18 December and his body was burnt.

Abrar said, the state has taken the responsibility of taking care of Dipu Das’s child, wife and parents. He said that this murder is a very cruel crime and there cannot be any reason to justify it.

Before meeting the family, Abrar discussed with chief advisor Mohammad Younis. Yunus asked Abrar to convey the government’s deepest condolences to the family. According to local media reports, Dipu Das’s father Ravi Chandra Das demanded justice for his son’s murder and told the counselor about the family’s situation.

Yunus’ office confirmed that financial assistance would be provided to Das’s family and the concerned authorities would be in touch with them in the times to come. So far, 12 people allegedly involved in the murder have been detained.

“Allegation, rumor or difference in belief can never lead to violence and no person has the right to take the law into their own hands,” Yunus said in a statement issued to the press. The Government reiterated its strong commitment to the rule of law and said that only the State has the authority to investigate any crime and ensure justice.

Das’s murder was followed by widespread protests by factory workers, students and rights groups in Dhaka and other parts. India also expressed its concern. Six days before the attack, masked gunmen in Dhaka had opened fire on Sharif Osman Hadi, leader of the right-wing cultural group Inquilab Manch. A few days later, he was admitted to a hospital in Singapore, where he was declared dead.
