US President Donald Trump has stopped the process of granting American citizenship and green cards to citizens of 19 countries with immediate effect. This decision has been taken after the firing of an Afghan refugee on National Guards near the White House last month.
These countries include Afghanistan, Myanmar, Burundi, Chad, Congo, Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Laos, Libya, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Togo, Turkmenistan, Venezuela and Yemen.
US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has said that all immigration, citizenship and green card related applications from these 19 countries will be on hold. Trump has already imposed a travel ban on these countries.
According to the order, people who reached America after January 20, 2021, will be re-examined and interviewed.
According to USCIS, the attack on the National Guard has exposed the flaws in the screening process of citizens of other countries. Therefore, this strict step has been taken while giving priority to national security.
Trump said- Immigration policies have spoiled the lives of Americans
Trump says these steps will reduce the illegal and nuisance population. He also claimed that America did not have such social problems after the Second World War, but now crime and disorder have increased due to wrong immigration policies.
He believes that despite technological advancements, wrong immigration policies have spoiled the lives of ordinary Americans. Trump clearly said, “The only solution to this problem is reverse migration, i.e. sending people back to their countries.”
Afghan refugee shot National Guardsmen
In America, on November 26, two National Guardsmen were shot near the White House. Both of them died in the attack. An Afghan refugee was detained in this case.
According to FBI officials, the attacker was 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal. He came to America from Afghanistan in August 2021. He applied for refugee status in 2024 and was approved in April 2025.
