Thakur had last year represented the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) after being unsold in the auction as the Sanjiv Goenka-owned franchise included him in the line-up as a replacement for Mohsin Khan.

Overall, he has played 105 matches in his Indian Premier League (IPL) career and has bagged 107 wickets while scoring 325 runs with the bat. He will be looking forward to improving his stats when he joins the Mumbai Indians (MI), a franchise with whom he was in 2010–12 as a support bowler.
