At the same time, some experts said that this question itself is wrong because the thinking of humans and machines cannot be weighed equally. The debate included renowned AI scientists like Geoffrey Hinton, Yann LeCun, Fei-Fei Li, Jensen Huang, Joshua Bengio and Bill Daly, who is also the winner of the 2025 Queen Elizabeth Engineering Award.
Geoffrey Hinton, who is called the Godfather of AI, said that it will take less than 20 years for Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), i.e. machines that think like humans, to arrive. He said that when a computer is argued with, it will defeat a human being. Hinton said that in 1984 he had created a small model with only 100 examples but at that time data and computing power were limited. Now both are in abundance so the future is very close.
On the other hand, Yoshua Benzio believes that the capability of AI has increased very rapidly in the last few years and if this pace continues, then in the next five years machines will start doing as much work as human workers. However, he also warned that it is risky to make too definite statements about the future because the path of technology is never straight.
Yann LeCun, Meta’s chief AI scientist, took a slightly different view. He said that the development of AI will not happen in one stroke, but gradually. New methods and models will emerge in the next 5 to 10 years but it will take a long time to achieve human level understanding. According to him, right now AI is not even as intelligent as a cat.
At the same time, Fei-Fei Li clearly said that the purpose of human brain and AI is different. In some tasks like identifying objects or translating languages, AI is ahead of humans, but when it comes to experience and sensation, machines are left behind. Humans feel the world while AI only processes.
During the discussion, the question also arose whether this rise of AI is just a bubble? On this, Jensen Huang said that just as the foundation of the Internet was laid in the dotcom era, similarly the foundation of AI is being laid today.
He said that now every GPU is being used and this technology is doing real work. However, LeCun was of the opinion that human intelligence will not come from LLM (Large Language Models) alone and the beginning of real Artificial Intelligence is yet to come.
