India said in a strong tone in the United Nations Security Council that the country has been a victim of cross-border terrorism and illegal arms smuggling for a long time. India attacked Pakistan without naming it and said that now weapons are being sent to India through drones also. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Parvathaneni Harish, during an open discussion on ‘Small Arms’, said that the UNSC should adopt a zero tolerance policy towards those who promote the movement and use of such weapons.
Harish said that India has faced the horrors of terrorism for many decades. Illicit trafficking of small arms and ammunition and its access to terrorist organizations is a matter of utmost concern.
India’s statement came after the Red Fort explosion
India’s statement came at a time when there was a massive explosion in a car near the Red Fort in Delhi, in which at least 10 people died and many were injured. Harish said that weapons smuggled from across the border are behind such attacks.

Harish said India has faced terrorism coming from across the border, where illegal arms smuggling is now also being done through drones. He said that these terrorist groups have such modern weapons are possible only when they are getting financial and technical support from outside.
India’s demand from UNSC
India urged the UNSC to take strong and coordinated action against terrorists and those supplying arms to armed groups. Harish said the Security Council should not show tolerance towards any form of terrorism or those who support it. He also said that the arms embargo is an effective way to stop the flow of arms into conflict zones, but it must be enforced fairly and strictly.

need for international cooperation
India said trafficking in small arms and light weapons impacts not only security but also development and humanitarian aspects. Harish said that to control these, countries will have to work together, so that border security, intelligence sharing and information exchange can be strengthened. He informed that UN Program of Action (POA) and International Tracing Instrument (ITI) are being actively implemented in India as a form of cooperation.
