Margashirsha Month Fast and Festival List: According to the Hindu calendar, after Kartik Purnima, the month of Kartik has also ended and the month of Margashirsha has started from 6 November 2025, which is also called the month of Aghan. Margashirsha is the 9th month of the Hindu calendar.
Lord Shri Krishna and Shri Vishnu are especially worshiped in this month. Kaal Bhairav Jayanti, Utpanna Ekadashi, Som Pradosh fast will be observed in the month of Margashirsha.
Kalashtami/ Kaal Bhairav Jayanti 2025
The fierce form of Lord Shiva is known as Kaal Bhairav, who is known as the lord of time and protector of religion. Kaal Bhairav Jayanti is celebrated every year on the Ashtami Tithi of Margashirsha Krishna Paksha. On this day Lord Shiva had incarnated in the form of Kaal Bhairav.
According to mythology, once a dispute arose between Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh regarding superiority. Lord Brahma described himself as supreme. Seeing this pride of Brahma, Lord Shiva became angry and a stunning divine form appeared from him, which was Kaal Bhairav.
To destroy Brahma’s ego, Kaal Bhairav cut off one of his heads, due to which he committed the sin of Brahmahatya. Kaal Bhairav begged for atonement. Ultimately his guilt was cured in Kashi. Since then Kashi is called Muktidham, where Kaal Bhairav himself is the Kotwal of the city. Kaal Bhairav’s vehicle is dog, which is considered a symbol of loyalty and vigilance.
Utpanna Ekadashi 2025
Ekadashi of the eleventh day of Krishna Paksha of Margashirsha month is known as Utpana Ekadashi. Lord Krishna is worshiped on this day. It is believed that by observing this fast one attains salvation after death.
According to beliefs, people observing fast on Utpanna Ekadashi should not eat food on the first night i.e. on Dashami Tithi of fasting. Apart from this, on Ekadashi, they should worship God in Brahmavela and perform aarti only.
Som Pradosh Vrat 2025
In Hindu religion, Lord Shiva is worshiped in many forms, in which Pradosh Vrat also has special significance. Since the fast is observed on Monday, it is known as Som Pradosh Vrat. This year Som Pradosh Vrat will be celebrated on 17 November 2025.
Pradosh Kaal means the time about 1.5 hours before sunset is considered best for worshiping Lord Shiva. According to Skanda Purana, poison appeared during the churning of the ocean and Shiva drank it to protect the gods and the entire universe. On the same evening, the gods started the tradition of Pradosh Vrat in the memory of Shiva.
