The cost of setting up a data center in Mumbai is $6.64 (about Rs 590) per watt. In comparison, it costs companies almost double to set up data centers in places like Singapore and Zurich. Apart from this, the price of electricity in Mumbai is also half compared to cities like Shanghai, which helps companies in saving expenses.
Only 3 percent data center capacity in India
About 20 percent of the world’s data is generated in India, but it has 3 percent of the world’s total data center capacity. If we understand in simple language, more data is generated in India, but there is no data center to store it. Due to this, dependence on data centers located abroad increases. Besides, this also indicates that there is immense potential for expansion of data centers in India. If we talk about the Asia-Pacific region, after China, India is one of the largest data center markets along with Japan and Singapore.
Huge investment required to build a data center
According to reports, data centers in India require huge investment and are also a great opportunity due to low costs. However, power and supply chain is a big challenge in its path. Analysis of current data reveals that the cost of building data centers per watt has increased by 5.5 percent in 52 markets around the world.
