Cross-Platform Chats: WhatsApp is bringing a feature for its users which can bring a big change in the world of chatting. Now you will not need to download different messaging apps like Telegram or Signal because you will be able to talk to people from other platforms only on WhatsApp.
What is the Cross-Platform Chat feature of WhatsApp?
This instant messaging app owned by Meta has been working on cross-platform messaging for a long time. Now according to the report of WABetaInfo, some users of the European Union have got the beta version of this feature for testing.
With the help of this feature, WhatsApp users will now be able to send messages even to people who use any third-party app (like Signal or Telegram). To activate it, you will have to go to Settings > Account > Third-party Chats.
What will be new in the feature
With this new option of WhatsApp, users will be able to send messages, photos, videos, voice notes and documents. Additionally, you can organize your incoming chats in two ways.
Combined Inbox: All WhatsApp and third-party chats will be visible together.
Separate Inbox: A separate folder will be created for third-party chats.
However, features like status updates, stickers or disappearing messages will not be available in this feature. Apart from this, people whom you have blocked on WhatsApp can contact you through third-party apps.
What will be the impact on privacy and security?
Users will have the option to decide whether they want to receive instant notifications for chat requests coming from third-party apps or review them later.
Although WhatsApp claims that it will not be able to read the content of third-party chats, these apps have different data protection policies. Nevertheless, these chats will be protected by end-to-end encryption.
Optional feature, launch starting from Europe
The most important thing is that this feature will be completely optional. That means, if you want, you can keep it closed and WhatsApp will continue to work as before.
According to reports, this feature will be launched in the European Union in early 2026. However, voice and video calling facilities are expected to arrive on other platforms by 2027.
