A massive fire broke out late on Monday night in the Old Timber Market of Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, which was so horrific that it kept burning for four hours. The flames were visible far and wide, creating an atmosphere of chaos in the area. The sensitivity of this fire was more due to the railway track being at a short distance from the timber market. If the fire had spread near the railway track, a major accident could have occurred or railway traffic could have been affected.

As soon as information about fire in the timber market was received, railway and local administration officials reached the spot. A total of more than 40 fire tenders from Bhopal Municipal Corporation, Bhapal Fire Service, Airport Authority of India and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) together brought the fire under control. After four hours of continuous efforts, the firefighters finally gained complete control over the fire. Hundreds of tons of wood and goods made from it were burnt to ashes in the timber market. Timber traders had to suffer losses worth crores of rupees.

The fire took a huge form due to the presence of many timber mills, saw machines and huge stock of wood in the area. The exact cause of the fire has not been known yet. Investigation is ongoing. The Delhi-Chennai railway track passes just behind the Bhopal Timber Market, which is one of the most important railway lines of the country. There was no impact on railway traffic due to the fire incident, but the effect of smoke and heat was definitely felt in the surrounding areas. At present the damage is being assessed. The local administration has assured all possible help to the traders.

Bhopal Collector Kaushalendra Vikram Singh said that there was no loss of life in this fire incident but some wood traders had to suffer huge losses. The Old Timber Market, located near Patra Bridge in Bhopal, is a busy commercial center where wooden furniture and other goods are manufactured. There are saw machines and wooden godowns built here. At around 7:30 pm on Sunday evening, a fire broke out from one such wooden warehouse, which soon engulfed some nearby warehouses and saw machines. According to the district administration, there has been a loss of more than Rs 2 crore in this fire incident.
