US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Tuesday that the US military attacked four boats in the eastern Pacific Ocean on Monday. 14 people were killed in these attacks.
The government claims that these boats were smuggling drugs. One person survived, rescued by Mexico. Hegseth also shared video of the attacks on social media, showing boats burning.
The American government is continuously running a campaign against drug smugglers. A total of 57 people have died so far. However, the government has so far shown no evidence that those killed were drug mafias. The family of one of the deceased said he was a fisherman and had no connection with drug trafficking.
Legal experts have raised the question whether it is against the law to drop a bomb directly without trying to catch or stop anyone. For this, the approval of the US Parliament i.e. Congress is necessary.
Many MPs from Trump’s own Republican Party are also raising questions on this campaign. Senator Mike Rounds said there needs to be a full investigation into the attacks and we need answers.
Thom Tillis said one should think carefully before ordering a lethal attack. Suzanne Collins said that these attacks without the approval of Congress are wrong. The Senate must pass a resolution that would either approve or stop the attacks.
Kentucky MP Rand Paul described the attacks as unlawful killings. He said that neither names were given, nor evidence was shown, nor was it proved that they were armed.
