Rohit Arya, who held seventeen children hostage at a theater studio in Mumbai’s Powai, was allegedly shot dead by Mumbai Police officer Amol Waghmare. This action was taken to rescue the children safely.

According to HT report, Amol Waghmare is an officer of the Anti-Terrorist Cell of Powai police station. It was he who allegedly fired at Rohit Arya, a resident of Pune. After being shot in the chest, Rohit was taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead.

Children were called on the pretext of audition for web series.

Rohit Arya was a film producer and activist. She allegedly rented RA Studio on the pretext of auditioning children for a web series. The children were brought to the studio with their parents and Rohit took them to the first floor. When the children did not get down till 1 pm, the parents were not able to contact them.

People informed the police from the second building

After this, people of the other building informed the police at quarter to two that some children were crying behind closed windows and pleading for help. He locked the children in, along with two women and a young assistant, and secured the studio door with a sensor to alert him of a theft. He threatened that if the police came inside, he would use inflammable chemicals and set them on fire. He also had an air gun.

The accused threatened to kill the children one by one

After this he divided the children into two groups and threatened to kill them one by one. He also recorded a video, in which he said that he only wanted to extort money from some people and had no intention of harming children. Police, bomb disposal squad and quick response team with the help of fire department entered the building from behind and started talking to Rohit. The police took two different routes. The first team entered the bathroom and took out the children safely and the second team entered the hall by breaking the glass and gained access to the people inside. This ensured that action was taken from both sides to protect all children and people.

Amol Waghmare entered the studio hall from the bathroom and fired at Rohit Arya. This decision was taken immediately, as Rohit was moving towards the police and the safety of the children was of primary importance. The bullet hit Rohit in the chest, he was taken to the hospital and declared dead. Amol Waghmare’s bravery and timely action was highly appreciated. He was described as a calm and trained officer in firing. Officers repeat this training every six months on when to fire and when not to fire. A senior officer said the team was prepared for any situation and the decision to open fire was taken on the spot.
