During a public event at the University of Mississippi in America, a woman of Indian origin challenged Vice President JD Vance in an open forum on immigration policy. Questioning the harsh immigration policies of the Donald Trump administration, the woman asked, ‘Why are people who have come to America following the rules, through hard work and by paying money, now there is talk of expelling them from here?’ This entire incident was captured on camera and is now going viral on social media.
What did the woman say during the program?
When the round of questions started during the programme, a woman of Indian origin stood up and said – ‘When you say that there are too many immigrants here, then who decided the limit of ‘too many’? You asked us to come here, invested our youth, our hard work, our money in this country, now you are the one who says that we cannot live here?
Vance said – ‘Less people should come, so that the social structure of the country is preserved’
JD Vance said in response that America should accept only a small number of legal immigrants. He argued that ‘uncontrolled immigration could affect the social unity of the country.’ Vance said, ‘If 100 people contribute to the country by coming illegally, it does not mean that now we should allow 1 million or 1 crore people to come every year.’

The woman asked – ‘When you yourself showed the way, why are you stopping me now?’
The woman then retorted and said that it was the American government that had assured people of the ‘American Dream’ for years. You yourself made your way to work hard, pay, and live here. Now you yourself say that we have gone beyond what is required – how is this justified?
Vance asked questions on wife’s religion
The woman also asked Vance about his interfaith marriage and whether his marriage to his Hindu wife has changed his worldview. On this JD Vance said- ‘I am a Christian and I stand by my faith. I want my wife to understand this too, but if she doesn’t want to, that’s her free will. God has given freedom to everyone.
The video of this question and answer is going viral on social media. Many users praised the woman’s courage, while some called Vance’s diplomatic response a ‘political rescue’.
