A resolution against imposing tariffs on Canada was passed in the US Senate on Wednesday. Its purpose was to eliminate Trump’s right to impose tariffs on Canada. This step was taken recently after the decision to impose 10% extra tariff in Canada.
According to The Hill report, the proposal passed by a vote of 50-46. Four Republican lawmakers also supported the proposal and voted to end the tariffs.
The Senate had already passed this proposal on April 2, but the House of Representatives did not take it forward, stalling the process. Now Democrat MP Tim Kaine has introduced it again. He says there is no legal justification for Trump’s imposition of tariffs on Canada because it cannot be justified under the Emergency Act.
The dispute between Trump and Canada escalated when the Canadian province of Ontario ran an ad on TV during the World Series. In this, former US President Ronald Reagan had opposed the tariff. Trump called it a hostile move and increased tariffs by an additional 10% on Canadian goods.
